Titania and Mibau Stema launch sustainable Rock Armour partnership

We are pleased to announce a new chapter in the supply of sustainable rock armour. Titania, a Kronos Company, and Mibau Stema Group have signed an agreement to repurpose by-products from Titania’s mining operations to deliver high-quality, eco-friendly rock armour for construction and coastal protection projects.

What does this mean for our customers?

The Tellnes mine in southern Norway, operated by Titania, is Europe’s largest sources of ilmenite, a key component in TiO2 pigments. In the process of mining, overburden rock—quartz-free metamorphic anorthosite with a density of approximately 2.7t/m³—is produced as a by-product. This high-quality material will now be repurposed for the manufacture of sustainable rock armour, available in all LMA and HMA sizes. Ultra-large pieces exceeding 15 tonnes can also be sourced upon request.

The rock will be extracted using advanced blasting techniques to minimize flat or square shapes, ensuring an optimal product for your applications. Shipments will be handled through Titania’s dedicated port facility at Jøssingfjorden, ensuring smooth and efficient delivery.

A Sustainable Solution

With over 100 million tonnes of rock already available from existing overburden stocks, this initiative is a major step towards environmental sustainability. By repurposing materials that would otherwise remain unused, we can significantly reduce the ecological footprint of mining operations while offering you a reliable source of high-quality rock armour.
